For nearly one hundred years, kids from all over the nation have come to the woods armed with rucksacks, footlockers and stationary for letters home to spend their summer holidays at one of Transylvania County’s many noteworthy summer camps. There are more than 20 residential summer camps for boys and girls with a wide array of interests nestled in the forests around Brevard.
So beloved are many of these summertime homes-away-from-home that it’s not unusual to see former campers return decades later to seek out the sacred spots where they first learned to dive, shoot an arrow, ride a horse, paddle a boat and conquer homesickness with a roasted marshmallow and a good ghost story.
