Equestrians return year after year to ride the beautiful trails and roads in Pisgah National Forest, Dupont State Forest, and Gorges State Park. Many people don't know, however, that even novices can discover the joy and excitement of horseback riding in Transylvania. So whether you're revisiting your favorite trail or looking for a fun new family adventure, there's no better place to saddle up than Transylvania County.

Image f you don't have horses but want to go riding, there are two great places in Transylvania County:Pisgah Forest Stables, and Whitewater Equestrian Center.
Pisgah Forest Stables is northeast of Brevard near the entrance to Pisgah National Forest at the junction of U.S 276, U.S. 64, and N.C. 280. One- and two-hour guided trail rides leave hourly throughout the day for riders ages 7 and up. In the spring and autumn you can also arrange a guided 3-day, 2-night camping trip. Whitewater Equestrian Center is in the southwestern tip of Transylvania County near Whitewater Falls on N.C. 281. One- or 1 1/2-hour guided trail rides are offered. Children must be 7 and up to ride solo, but 6-year-olds can ride on a lead. Younger children can enjoy pony rides on the grounds. For more information call 828-966-9646.

Horse owners can find short term boarding services at both Whitewater Equestrian Center and at The Stables at Las Praderas. Las Praderas is the home of Free Rein, a therapeutic riding center for children and adults with disabilities and special needs. They also offer accommodations for both horses and their owners. If you plan to ride on your own, be aware that not all trails are open to horses. Get a map before you start, and check signs at the trail heads to make sure they're horse accessible.
