For the Nature Nut, Brevard/Transylvania County is a Forest Fantasy

No one knows the forests better than the Black Bears.  But, they make lousy field guides.  So, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission created the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education.  Throughout the fall and winter, the center is an excellent source for fun and education for adults and children.

From a program appropriately dubbed “Nature Nuts” to “Finding Your Way In The Forest,” the center offers a variety of programs throughout the fall and winter.  Not only are these and other programs entertaining, they set the stage for you to enjoy nature’s beauty all the more in a county with
topographical elevations ranging from 1,000 feet above sea-level to 6,000 feet above sea-level.

There are few places with as much outdoor appeal as Transylvania County.  It is, after all, the “Cradle of Forestry.”  Not only is Transylvania County the southern entrance to the Pisgah National Forest, it is also home to the first school of forestry in America.  Established in 1898, the school is today a historic site known as Cradle of Forestry. The Cradle offers a host of fall activities, including Afternoon Tea with Llamas and Forest Festival Day.

Combined with Nantahala National Forest on its southern boundary, Transylvania County has more than 300 miles of hiking trails leading you through canopied trails to waterfalls (of which there are more than 250 in the county) and scenic views.  Cool fall weather not only nurtures the colorful splash of autumn leaves, it makes a brisk hike along these trails invigorating.

With much of Transylvania County under the preservation of National Forests, it is also a haven for a wide variety of outdoor activity.  Drop a dry-fly in the currents of the Davidson River and discover why it is rated one of the top trout streams in America.  Lace up and gear up for an exhilarating climb up the sheer rock face of the Devil’s Courthouse.  Or, saddle up and ride the scenic trails near one of many horse stables.

Throughout Transylvania County, you can select your level of outdoor overnight accommodations.  Camping facilities both on and off National Forest property allow you the luxury of RV sites or tent sites.  And, the Ranger Stations have a number of suggestions for overnight hiking adventures.
From those seeking simple serenity to those seeking high adventure, Transylvania County is 379 square miles of fall adventure and outdoor fun.  For more information, call the Brevard/Transylvania County Chamber of Commerce at 800-648-4523 or visit our website at www.visitwaterfalls.com.
