Adult Summer Reading

Discover A Universe of Stories through the Adult Summer Reading program at Transylvania County Library! Simply come by the Circulation Desk to register beginning Friday, June 1, 2018. Then read or listen to 5 TCL books to participate. Complete an entry card and drop it into the library Universe of Stories raffle box for a chance to receive weekly prizes that include gift certificates to Second Story Book Store and local eateries, as well as other surprises. Weekly drawings will begin on Friday, July 6, 2018. Complete as many entry cards as you wish over the summer and put them in the box by Thursday, August 9, 2018. The Grand Prize includes dinner at a local restaurant and will be drawn on Friday, August 10, 2018! Adult Summer Reading is a unique opportunity to rocket into books for pleasure, to seek out new knowledge and to explore new worlds. The library universe may lead the way to extraordinary and stellar experiences and might unleash a meteor shower of prizes. Yeah, you know you can read already, but why let the kids have all the fun this summer?

Introduction to Digital Photography for Youth Aged 8 – 13 @ TC Arts Council
Jul 16 – Jul 20 all-day

This week long workshop held at the TC Arts Council will introduce the students to the concepts of digital photography and how their cameras work. Each class will combine classroom games and information with actual picture taking, so that students can reinforce the concepts and terminology that they are learning throughout the week. The week will culminate in a photo book produced by each student – optional for $15.  Students aged 8 – 10 years old will have photography class Monday thru Friday, July 16 – 20 from 9:30 am – 12:30 pm and students aged 11 – 13 years old will have class from 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm. Cost is $150 per student, plus optional $15 for a photo book.  The workshop will be led by Kathy King, Brevard photographer, who has experience teaching photography and writing. She began studying photography in the 1980’s then went on to have a 20 year legal career before returning to photography as a vocation in 2008. Brewery Tours with Pura Vida

The tours will consist of visits to the Oskar Blues BreweryBrevard Brewing Company, and Ecusta Brewing.
Tours will start with participants being picked up from their Brevard accommodations and brought to Oskar Blues Brewery, where they can grab a flight or have a pint from Oskar Blues, while getting a formal tour of the brewery and the brewing process .
The second stop will be Brevard Brewing Company, located in downtown Brevard.  Here participants will have an opportunity to see and hear about what makes Brevard Brewing Company unique, while enjoying a pint on us.
The final stop on the tour is Ecusta Brewery located at the gates of Pisgah National Forest.  Feel free to grab a flight or pint from Ecusta while we talk a little about Ecusta brewery and the history of the Pisgah National Forest.
The tour will end with participants being provided with a ride back to their local accommodations.
Trips include tours of the breweries, a pint on us at Brevard Brewery, and transportation. Pints and Flights can be purchased separately while at the bar or tasting rooms.  Cost is $40 a person. Dart League @ Forks of the River Taproom

Join us for a local dart league with weekly tournaments happening every Wednesday at 6:30. Double elimination, random partner selection, open to all levels, Cricket and 501, no entry fee. Every 6 weeks starts a new competition and the lowest two weeks scores are dropped.

As always, you can play every week whether you join the competition or not. Come have some fun!

Hump Day Trivia @ Coffee cArts Brew Park

Olivier Messiaen’s ethereal “Quartet for the End of Time” is recognized as one of the most significant chamber works of the 20th century.  Written while he was a prisoner of war in German captivity and inspired by text from the Book of Revelation, it is scored for clarinet, violin, cello, and piano—the instruments and musicians sharing space in Stalag VIII-A.

A Week in the Water @ Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education

Young people join us for a weeklong series of hands-on classes that focus on the art and skill of fly-fishing. Learn about equipment, knots, casting techniques and more. Spend the last two days of the week fishing on the river. Ages 10-15.

Advanced WILD: Mountain Streams @ Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education

Learn techniques used in the field to study our mountain streams and the wildlife that inhabit them. Some of the questions we’ll discuss are: How healthy are our trout populations? What about the other animals that live in or use the rivers and streams? What are the factors affecting our mountain waterways? Learn activities you can take back to your classroom. Prepare to get wet and have lots of fun in the Davidson River. The workshop is suitable for formal and non-formal educators. CEU and EEC credits available upon workshop completion. Ages 18 and up.

Healing Sounds Yoga Thurs @ Coffee cArts

Yoga with a “Gaelic” twist ~ Instructor and singer Aoife Clancy will lead unique classes every TUES 6:00PM and THURS 9AM. (Morning class will be Hatha Yoga with healing sounds, and the evening class is more of a gentle yoga class..again with healing sounds.)

Gaelic melodies, vibrational sound and spoken word are soothing additions to the Yoga class. Aoife (pronounced Ee-fa) offers 16 years of Yoga experience. Join us for class, then enjoy an espresso drink, smoothie, kombucha or another choice from our 19 taps.
